MELBOURNE, 23 Jul 2026 — This July, Creative Asia Art Centre will present In Between, a group exhibition situated within an LGBTQIA+ context, running from 23 to 30 July 2026. The exhibition brings together emerging and established artists to explore the multiplicity of identity, emotion, and existence.

In Between is conceived not as a fixed narrative, but as an open and fluid space—one where different ways of being can coexist, intersect, and unfold without hierarchy or limitation. Through a diverse range of artistic practices, the exhibition invites audiences to engage with states that are not bound by definition, but instead exist in relation, tension, and coexistence.

At the core of the exhibition is the concept of “in between” as a condition that is not limited to ambiguity or transition. It may be fluid or defined, shifting or already affirmed. Emerging from LGBTQAI+ lived experiences, the exhibition reflects the ongoing negotiation between self and society—between visibility and invisibility, expression and recognition—while resisting the impulse to reduce these experiences into singular or fixed interpretations.

"In Between is about creating a space where difference does not need to be resolved. It allows for multiple ways of being to exist simultaneously—without the pressure of definition or conclusion."

"You don’t have to define yourself here. You are invited to remain—in between." Curatorial Team.

The exhibition will feature works across painting, installation, moving image, sculpture, digital media, sound, and performance. Emphasizing spatial experience and sensory atmosphere, In Between seeks to construct an environment where audiences are invited not only to view, but to remain—to sense, to inhabit, and to coexist within a shared condition.

As both an exhibition and a platform, In Between highlights the role of contemporary art in reflecting the complexity of LGBTQIA+ experiences today. By foregrounding openness, fluidity, and multiplicity, the project creates space for voices and perspectives that extend beyond conventional frameworks of identity.

Audiences are invited to experience this exhibition as an unfolding state—one that does not require resolution, but instead encourages presence, awareness, and connection.

OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS

In Between is currently accepting submissions from artists working across all disciplines, including visual art, installation, performance, video, and interdisciplinary practices. Artists are invited to respond to the exhibition’s theme by exploring identity, perception, relationships, and lived experience, particularly in relation to LGBTQIA+ contexts. Submissions may engage with the theme directly or indirectly, and are encouraged to reflect openness, fluidity, and diverse modes of expression.
