MELBOURNE, 5 JUNE 2026 — Creative Asia Foundation presents Project 1838: Buffer Room, a group exhibition bringing together 22 artists at Creative Asia Art Centre.

Through diverse artistic approaches, Buffer Room explores how belonging is formed, carried, and reimagined within conditions of movement, migration, and change.

Unlike traditional wall-based exhibitions, Buffer Room encourages artists to engage directly with the gallery environment. Works extend beyond the wall and into the space itself, transforming the exhibition into a shared environment that audiences can move through, inhabit, and experience.

The exhibition approaches belonging not as a fixed destination, but as something continuously negotiated through memory, objects, relationships, and everyday experiences. Across the exhibition, artists reflect on moments of departure, transition, adaptation, and connection, revealing the many ways people navigate shifting cultural and personal landscapes.

“Buffer Room is a space to pause—where belonging is not something that must be proven or defined, but something that can be felt, even temporarily, in moments of connection and presence.”

Rather than offering a singular narrative, the exhibition unfolds through a collection of individual experiences. Together, the works create a temporary landscape shaped by memory, movement, uncertainty, and care, inviting audiences to consider what it means to find a sense of place in an increasingly mobile world.

As part of Creative Asia Foundation’s commitment to supporting contemporary artistic practice and cross-cultural dialogue, Project 1838 continues to provide a platform for emerging and independent artists to experiment, connect, and share their perspectives with wider audiences.

The opening event on 5 June will bring together artists, audiences, and community members for an evening of conversation and exchange, inviting visitors to slow down, pause, and find moments of belonging within the space.
